Win Conditions
The ways a game of Riftbound can end.
The first player to reach 8 points wins.
How Points Are Scored
Points come from controlling battlefields and a handful of card effects.

| Source | When it happens | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Conquer | You take control of a battlefield | +1 |
| Hold | You still control a battlefield at the start of your turn | +1 |
| Card effects | Some cards grant points directly | Varies |
Most games are decided by fighting over battlefields repeatedly — taking them, defending them, and banking hold points while your opponent tries to reclaim them.
Three Paths to Victory
Hold your way there
If you control a battlefield at the start of your turn, you earn a hold point. That's it — one hold point is enough to take you from 7 to 8 and win the game, regardless of what's happening anywhere else on the board.
Control all battlefields
To win through conquering, you need to score on every battlefield — not just take one. Hold points and conquers count together toward that total, so the path to the final point can be a mix of both.
For example: you start a turn at 6 points controlling one battlefield. You collect a hold point for 7, then conquer the remaining battlefield for 8 — that's the game.
If you're conquering into an uncontrolled battlefield and it's not the last one you need, you'll receive a complimentary draw instead of a winning point. The moment your conquer scores on all battlefields in a turn and your score crosses the threshold you win.
Card effects
Some cards grant points directly, bypassing the battlefield system. These can deliver the final point immediately — making a board that looks safe suddenly dangerous.
Changing the Victory Score
The default threshold is 8 points, but some cards raise it:
Aspirant's Climb — Increase the points needed to win the game by 1.
When effects like this are in play, adjust your target accordingly. "Getting to 9" is much much harder than it seems.
The 8th Point
Before committing to a finishing turn, confirm which of these applies:
- Holding a battlefield you already control → that hold point can close the game if the units survive your opponent's turn.
- Can you take every battlefield next turn? → sweeping them all crosses the threshold.
- Do you have a card effect that grants a point? → that can close immediately.
There are multiple ways to cross the threshhold and secure a game. The best players use a combination of holds, conquers, and card effects to compound points and ascend to the win.
